Corporate Responsibility

From the very conception of the idea of creating an all-inclusive, expansive modern city, Diyar Al Muharraq has considered the protection of the natural environment within the project and its surrounding areas to not just be a part of its intrinsic Corporate Social Responsibility but as a completely separate, extensive function that would ensure the perusal of every last detail in sustainable terms and the implementation of the best practices that would maintain the conservation of the vast eco-friendly characteristics of the development.

Diyar Al Muharraq has consistently shown its commitment to making every green initiative count by undertaking various measures which preserve the fragile marine ecosystem that surrounds the project location, adopting world class standards and partnering with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to promote and improve its environmental accountability.

The project has also used its community reach to build environmental awareness and for nurturing fishing communities and the marine life in its surrounding waters.

  • Diyar Al Muharraq has made its coastal connection the core of its development. Besides making waterways and canals an integral part of its design, the project has also dramatically increased Bahrain’s beach areas with more than 40 km of waterfront, of which over 20 km have been assigned for the public use.
  • This has been augmented by cleaning up existing public beaches as community initiatives.
All this and many more such CSR projects and environmental programmes initiated at Diyar Al Muharraq are helping to create a legacy of that is working steadily towards a long-term vision for the future of Bahrain. We know that there is an environmental and social impact, and we have taken it upon ourselves to act with responsibility and ensure the best for the people of Bahrain and for our country’s resources.
Ras Raya Harbour
  • As part of its efforts to keep alive the marine traditions and ecological connection between the sea and the people of Muharraq, Diyar Al Muharraq has funded the building of the Ras Raya Harbour for fishermen of the area.
The BD 3.4 million harbour, fully funded by Diyar Al Muharraq and dedicated for the benefit of the local fishermen of the area, is a modern and fully-equipped fishing harbour that will serve the local fishermen of Muharraq and its villages – Samaheej, Al Meir and Galali. The harbour covers an area of over 100,000 square meters and will house approximately 190 fishing boats and 60 dhows , and boasts full modern amenities such as a dedicated electrical sub-station, fuel station supplying both petrol and diesel, water tanks, 120 storage units, a building for workshops, and a protective perimeter fence, among others.
  • Diyar Al Muharraq has also replenished the open seas surrounding the project with a large stock of viable fish species. Working in collaboration with the General Authority for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife, the authorities have released fish such as Sobaity Bream juveniles intended to increase fish stocks in the waters of Bahrain and promote the creation of marine protected areas.
At Diyar Al Muharraq, we have a focussed Corporate Social Responsibility vision that embraces a wide spectrum of community initiatives that help us to contribute to the betterment of our Kingdom. From action for environmental responsibility to partnering the government and enabling affordable housing and encouraging staff programs to serve the community’s vulnerable groups, we embrace every good cause with energy, enthusiasm and effectiveness. From the time of its founding as Bahrain’s biggest mixed-use residential urban development, Diyar Al Muharraq has embraced three tracks of CSR that allow it to engage with the community, enrich the environment and prepare it for the future and develop a meaningful participation in nation-building.From installing artificial reefs in its project waterways to restocking the marine environment with fish to a Recycle IT programme that helped the government develop a professionally managed e-waste management system, Diyar Al Muharraq has always gone the extra mile towards a greener future.Diyar Al Muharraq encourages its staff and the surrounding community to engage with the more vulnerable sections of society and is at the forefront of taking goodwill and contributing to the elderly and to the needy. NGOs and societies such as the Muharraq Communal Society are encouraged to participate in community betterment such as beach cleaning, restoring the old Muharraq market etc. with logistical support from Diyar Al Muharraq.Realising its role in building the future of the Kingdom, Diyar Al Muharraq has embarked on one of the most dynamic private-public partnerships by working with the Ministry of Housing to develop affordable social housing for Bahraini nationals on the Ministry’s waiting list. The houses due to be built with careful attention to detail are part of Diyar Al Muharraq’s strategy to support the Ministry of Housing’s Social Housing Programme for the benefit of Bahraini families.
  • In consultation with reputed international agencies, Diyar Al Muharraq has worked to preserve and replenish the aquatic life at the location. Different stages like Baseline Environmental Studies, Water Quality Monitoring, Ecological Monitoring, Coastline Monitoring, and Environmental Compensation Plan (ECP) have been devised as part of the company’s extensive Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
  • The project is the first in the GCC to commission and adopt an online Environmental Management System as part of its comprehensive Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
  • Diyar Al Muharraq has partnered with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to promote and improve Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) practices.
  • DIANA is another system that Diyar Al Muharraq has implemented to get automated real-time updates and analysis on environmental monitoring and management.
  • At every level we have been supervising all work – our contractors are monitored with specialist consultants who can guide us on the right measures.
  • The project has been monitored from 2006 and continues to be rigorously supervised. Already more than 250 artificial reefs have been placed in the surrounding waters and we plan to continue this process. This has resulted in a significant increase in the population of fish in the surrounding waters.
All of this means that the Diyar Al Muharraq community will benefit from healthy seas and environment and the eco-footprint of the project will be smaller, creating a legacy of social, economic and environmental well-being for the future.
